Longtime CarePoint emergency medicine physician Samuel Killian, MD, has been named ER Physician of the Year by the Plains to Peaks Regional Emergency Medical and Trauma Advisory Council (RETAC), becoming the first Lincoln Health (Hugo, CO) physician to win the award.

Dr. Killian was nominated and selected for his “leadership and commitment to patients.” He was honored at a Basic Life Support conference and banquet on April 25, 2026, in Limon, CO, where RETAC representatives from across the state were in attendance.

“Dr. Killian brings incredible value to our facility and our community,” Lincoln Chief Nursing Officer Rachel Carson said. “He is the guy you want taking care of your family.”

Colorado has 11 RETACs, which are authorized by statute to provide a coordinated approach to emergency medical and trauma care. The Plains to Peak region covers Cheyenne, El Paso, Kit Carson, Lincoln, and Teller counties. It organizes regional trauma training, holds quarterly meetings, and hosts multiple conferences throughout the year to support continuing education for clinicians.

Dr. Killian’s entire medical career has been spent with CarePoint. He joined the physician-owned practice in 1999 and began practicing at Lincoln in 2021. Prior to joining the Lincoln team, he practiced at HCA HealthONE Swedish (Englewood, CO) for 22 years.

A University of Texas Southwestern Medical School graduate, Dr. Killian completed his emergency medicine residency at Denver Health.

“Dr. Killian brings incredible value to our facility and our community. He is the guy you want taking care of your family.”
